My Natural Treatments as a Toronto Naturopath

My holistic treatment plan may include AcupunctureHerbal MedicineDiet and nutrition, Lab Testing, and Lifestyle Counselling.

Acupuncture, herbal medicine, diet and nutrition, lab testing, and lifestyle counselling are key pillars of natural healthcare delivered by naturopathic doctors in Ontario. Together, they offer a holistic approach to wellness that supports the body’s ability to heal, restore balance, and prevent illness.

By combining these natural treatments, naturopathic care supports the body as an integrated whole. Instead of masking symptoms, it aims to identify and resolve the underlying causes of illness, using safe and evidence-informed strategies. The result is a personalized, natural approach that empowers people to take an active role in their health and enjoy better vitality, resilience, and long-term wellness.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is the insertion of very fine (not much thicker than a hair) needles into specific points to influence energy flow to the various organs in Chinese medicine.  From a Western medicine standpoint, acupuncture appears to increase the production of endorphins (your body’s own morphine) and enkephalins (which have effects similar to endorphins).

Acupuncture stimulates specific points on the body to regulate the nervous system, improve circulation, reduce inflammation, and balance hormones. It’s widely used as one of our natural treatments to relieve pain, reduce stress, support fertility, and improve sleep and digestion.

Don’t like needles? No problem! Many other natural treatments work without acupuncture!  Read More About Acupuncture

What is Herbal or Botanical Medicine?

Herbal medicine uses plants or plant extracts to help the body heal, provide nourishment and relieve symptoms while addressing the root cause of your health problems with other natural treatments.

Unlike pharmaceuticals, herbs often support multiple systems at once. For example, an adaptogenic herb like ashwagandha can reduce stress, support energy levels, and help balance cortisol.

How does changing my diet help?

Diet and nutrition form the foundation of good health and natural treatments. Personalized nutrition plans help identify and eliminate inflammatory foods while optimizing nutrient intake. This can ease digestive issues, support healthy weight, stabilize blood sugar, and improve skin, energy, and mood.

The foods you eat cause changes in your body’s internal chemistry, altering blood sugar levels, electrolytes, cholesterol, triglycerides, and more.  Depending on your choices, foods can provoke either a profound positive or a negative effect.  Does your diet have to be perfect? No way! No one’s is, but most people can make some adjustments that will change their overall health.  Read More About Diet and Nutrition

What tests can a Naturopathic Doctor do that my doctor can’t?

Several.  OHIP does not cover a wide range of specialized tests; therefore, medical doctors do not order them.  Tests for yeast, vitamins and minerals, food sensitivities, parasites, hormones, fertility, neurotransmitters, and more.

Lab testing provides valuable insights into the root causes of symptoms. It can reveal hidden hormone imbalances, nutrient deficiencies, thyroid dysfunction, and food sensitivities. This information allows naturopathic treatment to be targeted and effective rather than just symptom-focused.

Lifestyle Counselling

Lifestyle counselling addresses habits that affect health, such as sleep quality, stress management, physical activity, and emotional well-being. Small, sustainable changes in daily routines can have a profound long-term impact on physical and mental health.

How many naturopathic treatments will I need?

That varies from person to person and depends on your condition and many other variables.  Typically, the first two visits with Dr. Frank are the most important and information-rich.  Non-acupuncture visits may be 3-6 weeks between the first and second visits, then 2-6 months apart.  If you are including acupuncture in your treatment, sessions are usually once per week for 4-6 weeks. After that, once per month.

How much does it cost to see a naturopath in Toronto?

Naturopathic visit fees vary by clinic and appointment length, and most extended health insurance plans cover some or all of the cost. Dr. Frank’s current fees are listed on the Hours & Fees page.

Do naturopaths take OHIP in Ontario?

No. Naturopathic care is not covered by OHIP. However, many employer-sponsored extended health benefit plans include naturopathic coverage for natural treatments, so it’s worth checking your plan.

What’s the difference between a naturopathic doctor and a medical doctor?

Naturopathic doctors in Ontario are regulated primary care providers who focus on identifying and addressing the underlying causes of health concerns through diet, lifestyle, botanical medicine, and specialized lab testing, working alongside conventional medical care rather than replacing it.

Can a naturopath order blood work in Ontario?

Yes. Licensed naturopathic doctors in Ontario can order a range of lab tests, including many specialized tests for hormones, nutrients, and food sensitivities that are not typically covered or ordered through OHIP.
