As a naturopathic doctor, I firmly believe in the importance of liver detoxification. Our liver is responsible for filtering and eliminating toxins from our body, and when it is overwhelmed, it can lead to various health issues. The latest research on liver detoxification has shown us that it involves several steps, including methylation, sulfation, and glucuronidation. In this blog post, I will discuss each of these steps, the vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients needed for these steps, as well as some herbs and supplements that can aid in liver detoxification.

Methylation

Methylation is a process by which a methyl group (CH3) is added to a molecule. In liver detoxification, methylation is responsible for detoxifying hormones, neurotransmitters, and various chemicals. Methylation requires several nutrients, including folate, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, and SAMe (S-adenosylmethionine).

Folate is essential for methylation because it is a precursor to the active form of folate, 5-MTHF (5-methyltetrahydrofolate). 5-MTHF is required for the methylation of homocysteine to methionine, which is then converted to SAMe.
